Year 6

WELCOME TO YEAR 6!

Staff:

6 Cedar: Ms Barkerwood, Miss Kay, Miss Scadden

6 Oak: Mr Sheffrin, Ms Howe, Miss Child

Welcome to year 6 everyone!  This term we are going to be continuing all our fantastic learning.  Children will be continuing to build their writing stamina in preparation for secondary school, using a broad range of grammatical structures, and ambitious vocabulary.  Children will have the opportunity to read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts and become more confident in answering test style questions.

Our science topic will be light this half term. Children will have the opportunity to learn about how light travels, how it is measured and various process including refraction and reflection. Children will have the opportunity to plan their own investigations into how light travels, while observing how light shapes the days, and seasons and the interactions between the sun, moon and stars.

In maths, we will revise the 4 operations and place value work that we have learned so far in preparation for the maths SAT’s while also consolidating understanding of area and perimeter, data handling, conversions between units and geometry.

We will continue to develop our understanding or grammar, focussing on clauses, apostrophes and determiners as well as consolidating our spelling patterns.

Key Information:

Reading

Please can you make sure that your child reads to you at least twice a week and sign their reading book to show that this has happened. As a reward for this, children will get stickers on our reading leader boards.

PE

Outdoor PE: Tuesday

Indoor PE: Friday

Please note: Children should come to school in their PE kits on PE days.  They will spend all day in these so they do not need to bring school uniforms.

Homework

Homework will be set on a Friday and will consist of times tables rockstars, spelling and reading. We strongly recommend that you encourage children to complete it as it is extremely important in their learning journey.

Times Tables Rockstars

Each child has an account that they can access at home - there is also a 'Times tables Rockstars' app that you can download to your phone or tablet. It has been proven that those children who use these perform better in school and in tests.
