Sustainable Schools

Our school was lucky to be included in the ‘Yorkshire Food Discovery Project’ which subsidised farm visits for all children in Years 2, 3, 4 and 6. They also paid for a farmer to visit Year 1 and talk about his job and ‘Curriculum Kitchen’ to come into school and make soup and butter with Year 5. The Food Topic helped the children to understand more about: where our food comes from; food miles; habitats and sustainability issues. The Celebration Event was a great success and gave each year group a chanced to makeand sell some food-related products.

Green Team has been active this term doing gardening, composting, litter collection, pumpkin and apple harvesting, running stalls, collecting WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and planting an apple tree. Thanks to all our very active members.

Our sustainable schools targets for this year are to:

  • Use the newsletter to communicate sustainable schools issues
  • Maintain an active Green Team
  • Use eco-monitors to help reduce energy use
  • Install another water butt
  • Use Green Team to compost fruit and vegetable waste
  • Use the Yorkshire Food Discovery Project to learn about healthy, locally produced food
