Mathematics at Whitecote Primary School
At Whitecote Primary School we follow the Primary National Curriculum 2014 for Mathematics. This covers the following areas:
- Number and place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division
- Properties of shapes
- Position and direction
- Ratio and proportion (year 6)
- Algebra (year 6)
As of September 2021, in years 1-6, we will be following a DFE approved scheme called 'Power Maths'. This is a textbook, mastery-based curriculum with a clear focus on number. Children are given adequate time to study an area in-depth and consolidate their understanding of a topic through fluency, problem-solving and reasoning activities.
As a school, we believe strongly in teaching children maths in a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach. This means that children of all ages and abilities are given the chance to use concrete equipment to support their learning, before moving onto pictorial representations and abstract approaches.
