We were very fortunate to receive a visit from Chris Naylor-Ballesteros, author and illustrator of ‘I’m Going to Eat This Ant’ and ‘I Love You, Stick Insect’ on Friday 19th January. Chris grew up locally although currently lives in France where he writes and illustrates picture books for children.
Chris started off the morning with an inspirational assembly for all the children in Years 1 to 6, during which he talked about his books, his career as an author / illustrator and how he turns his many ideas into finished books with the help of his publisher, Bloomsbury. He also set us the challenge of writing our own books using two sheets of plain paper! He is very much looking forward to seeing any books the children bring in so feel free to give them to your class teacher during the next week or so.
After the assembly, Chris went to work with our Year 2 children, looking at the illustration part of his work, before spending some time doing a book signing for those children who wanted to take home a special signed copy of one of his books.
To finish off his visit, Chris spent some time with our Year 4 children, talking about his career as an author and illustrator of picture books and answering their many questions! Many of the children were so inspired by his words that they have started writing their own books already!
We have purchased a few copies of each book to go into our library. The classes will have chance to read these together during the week before they get snapped up and borrowed from the library by all our eager readers!
We hope you’ll agree that meeting a successful author / illustrator has been an amazing experience for the children of Whitecote and we are pleased to say that this was all made possible by Maggie Power, our storyteller (currently working with Year 3), and the Ilkley Literature Festival.
