OPaL at Whitecote Primary School

OPAL at Whitecote Primary School

At Whitecote Primary School, we are excited to be introducing a new approach to play that will enrich our children’s experiences at break and lunchtime and support their physical, social, emotional and creative development.

Our school values of Inspire, Nurture and Challenge are at the heart of everything we do, and the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme reflects these values perfectly. Through high-quality play opportunities, we aim to inspire curiosity and imagination, nurture wellbeing and friendships, and challenge children to develop resilience, independence and confidence.

We recognise that childhood today looks very different from previous generations. Many children have fewer opportunities to play freely outdoors, explore their environment and take managed risks. At Whitecote Primary School, we believe that play is essential to children's happiness, learning and development. It is not simply a break from learning—it is an important part of learning itself.

To support this vision, we are introducing the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme, an award-winning, evidence-based programme that has been developed over more than 20 years and successfully implemented in hundreds of schools across the UK and beyond. OPAL has been recognised nationally and internationally for its positive impact on children's wellbeing, behaviour and physical activity.

Why OPAL?

Children learn in many different ways, and some of their most valuable learning happens through play. Playtimes account for around 20% of the school day—the equivalent of more than a year of a child's primary school education. We want to ensure that this time is meaningful, engaging and enjoyable for every child.

Research shows that children are spending increasing amounts of time indoors and on screens, with fewer opportunities for outdoor play. For many children, school provides the best opportunity to enjoy active, creative and social play experiences.

Schools that have successfully embedded OPAL often report:

  • Happier children who enjoy school more

  • Improved behaviour and relationships

  • Increased confidence and resilience

  • Greater creativity and problem-solving skills

  • Improved physical activity levels

  • Fewer playground disputes

Inspire, Nurture and Challenge Through Play

Play is a powerful learning process that helps children develop skills that cannot always be taught directly in the classroom.

Through OPAL, we will:

Inspire

  • Creativity, imagination and curiosity

  • Exploration and discovery

  • Independent thinking and problem-solving

Nurture

  • Positive friendships and teamwork

  • Emotional wellbeing and self-confidence

  • A sense of belonging and inclusion

Challenge

  • Resilience and perseverance

  • Risk assessment and decision-making

  • Physical development and adventurous play

What Changes Will You See?

As part of the OPAL programme, we will be introducing new resources, developing different areas of our outdoor environment and seeking donations of "loose parts"—everyday materials that children can use creatively within their play.

Children may have access to a wider range of play opportunities and spaces across the school grounds. They will be encouraged to make choices, collaborate with others and explore new ways to play.

This may mean that children occasionally come home a little muddier or more tired than usual! We see this as a positive sign that they have been active, engaged and immersed in meaningful play experiences. Where appropriate, children will be encouraged to wear waterproof clothing and wellies to help protect their uniforms during wetter weather.

Working Together

Whitecote Primary School will be supported by an OPAL mentor throughout the implementation process. There will be opportunities for parents and carers to learn more about the programme and see the exciting developments taking place.

We look forward to working alongside our families and wider school community as we transform our playtimes into rich opportunities for learning, growth and enjoyment.

Together, we will create a play environment where every child is inspired, nurtured and challenged every day.

Great Play, Every Day, for Every Child
