What learning looks like in Little Doves.

Welcome to the Summer term!

This term, the children spend a significant amount of time caring for the plants, fruit and vegetables grown during the previous term. They enjoy observing the flowers in the garden as they grow, noticing changes over time and exploring the variety of colours. The children actively take part in caring for the plants by using watering cans, smelling the flowers—particularly the lavender—and learning how to look after living things. These experiences support the development of sensory awareness and gross motor skills, while also helping children practise control and coordination when handling heavier objects.

We are fortunate to be able to share the fruit and vegetables we grow at snack time, which helps children develop an understanding of healthy eating and learn where food comes from. The garden provides many opportunities for developing gross motor skills, encouraging children to be active through a range of outdoor activities. Children particularly enjoy playing chasing games and spending quiet time outdoors looking at books and enjoying the fresh air.

During the second half of the term, the children explore the topic of transport. They learn about different types of transport and the sounds they make, listening carefully and identifying these sounds as part of early phonics activities. The children also take part in floating and sinking activities, introducing them to early scientific concepts through hands-on exploration.
