Welcome to Year 6!

Welcome to our Year 6 class page. This page will keep you up to date with what is happening in our classroom and give you an overview of what your child will be learning this half term. Spring 1 is a busy and exciting time in Year 6, and we are looking forward to exploring some important topics together while continuing to build independence, confidence and resilience.

What We’re Learning This Half Term

In English, children are studying the novel Goodnight Mr Tom, using it to explore a range of creative literary devices. Alongside this, pupils will be writing a variety of non-fiction texts, including newspaper reports, non-chronological reports and letters, all linked to our World War 2 topic. We will also continue to develop our grammar knowledge, focusing on clauses, apostrophes and determiners, while consolidating key spelling patterns.

In Maths, we begin by revisiting and securing our understanding of place value and applying this knowledge when converting between units of measure. We then move on to ratios before starting our first introduction to algebra, including number functions and simple formulae.

In Science, our topic is Light. Children will learn about how light travels, how it is measured, and how reflection and refraction occur. They will plan and carry out their own investigations and explore how light affects day and night, the seasons, and the relationships between the sun, moon and stars.

In History, our focus is World War 2. We will study the key events leading up to and during the war, with a particular emphasis on how the conflict affected children, including the experiences of evacuees.

In Art, pupils will analyse and create their own WW2 propaganda posters. They will explore typography, colour, slogans and graphic design to communicate powerful messages and ideas.

In PE, indoor lessons will focus on handball, developing hand–eye coordination, throwing and catching accuracy, and cooperative team strategies. Outdoor PE will centre on tennis, where children will practise backhands, lob shots, doubles play and tactical decision-making.

In Computing, children will be learning about blogging. They will create their own blogs and podcasts, learning how to communicate appropriately online, share ideas safely, and consider audience and purpose when publishing digital content. This work helps children develop strong digital literacy skills while understanding how to stay safe and respectful online.

Other Areas of Learning

Children will continue their ukulele lessons every Thursday afternoon. In RE, pupils will be developing their understanding of Sikhism, learning about how Sikhs show commitment to God in their daily lives and through celebration.
